
According to a report released Tuesday by the Michigan Auditor General, about 1,900 child care providers who had been convicted of crimes, including child abuse, murder and sex offenses, were working in day care although they were ineligible for such work. About 4,600 children were placed at risk due to this oversight. The audit did not look at all licensed day care operators, but only those who participate in the state's Child Development and Care Program, which provides financial assistance to parents enrolled in education and job training classes.
