By Ron Fonger | Flint JournalApril 22, 2010, 3:08PMGENESEE COUNTY -- Two child welfare agencies have merged to create theWeiss Advocacy Center and will announce details of the new affiliation at a news conference April 29. The Consortium on Child Abuse and Neglect and the Child Advocacy Center merged on March 31 to form the new organization, said Jodie Elazizi, assistant director of the Weiss Advocacy Center.
"The trend is toward consolidating resources and staff," Elazizi said. "There is no reason for us to be separated."
Elazizi said the CAC was formed in 2004 after having been a part of the CCAN previously.
CAC has focused on conducting interviews of children who have been victims of abuse or neglect in a child-friendly environment. CCAN has focused on programs including Court Appointed Special Advocates, and sexual abuse prevention.
The Weiss Advocacy Center will continue to focus on issues of abuse and neglect.
The center was named in honor of the late Robert E. Weiss, former chief Genesee County probate judge, according to a news release announcing the merger. He was a former member of the CAC Board of Directors.
