Stars for Children Essay Contest

Essay Topic:  The Power of One:  I Can Make a Difference.  Your essay should describe how you can make a difference to end child abuse and neglect in our community.

Child abuse affects us all in many ways.  Children who are being hurt or not cared for at home may have difficulty getting along with others, have trouble in school, lack self-esteem, grow up to have trouble with the law, become dependant on drugs or alcohol, and worst of all, think that it is okay to hurt other people.  Genesee County has twice as many confirmed victims of abuse and neglect than the state average.  Last year in our county, 1400 children were removed from their homes and placed in foster care due to child abuse and neglect.  Offenders come from all economic, ethnic, racial and educational backgrounds and religious traditions.
